Oven Towel Tutorial

Oven Towel Tutorial - {The Ribbon Retreat Blog}

These days it can be hard to find a modern looking oven towel.  Using the the fabric, ribbon, and  buttons (coming soon to the site) from The Ribbon Retreat I had a blast making these cute, and ever practical oven towels.

To begin, start with a regular sized kitchen hand towel and cut it in half  horizontally. If you want to add an emellishment  like ribbon or fabric, do it now before you fold and gather it.  If using fabric, measure the length of the towel and add 1/2 to both the length and width to account for folding a 1/4 inch on all sides, (it’s up to you how wide you want it to be). Cut the fabric, iron down the edges, pin and sew where you want it to be. If using ribbon, cut the ribbon to the length of the towel, seal the edges with your preferred method, pin and sew.

Fold the edges of the towel so they meet in the center of the back.  Take a needle and thread and start off with a couple knots. Stitch it to the end, gather it, and finish off with a few more knots.

Then cut a piece of fabric to 8×10.  Fold it vertically with right sides together. That way when you turn it right side out you’ll have a 4×10 rectangle. What you want to do is sew along the one short side and the long side and leave one end completely open.

Fold the edges under on the open end and slip the towel inside. Pin to secure. Sew along the edge making sure the towel is staying inside the fabric. I just used my regular needle and went slow.

After the towel and fabric are sewn together, fold the fabric down and mark where you want your button hole to be.  I used the vanishing fabric marker, which is SO nice by the way!  Then make your button hole.  Sew the button on so that half of it is on the towel and half is on the fabric.  That’s what I did. It can really go anywhere you want it. (sorry I guess I didn’t take a picture of this).  That’s it!  Not much to it.  I added 1 1/2 in. double ruffle ribbon to the bottom of one, used some fabric for a strip at the bottom of another one,  I also made one with a posie and ribbon to tie it to the oven instead of doing a button hole.  The possibilities are endless!
